Pier 4 History

The story of Pier 4 is deeply intertwined with the history of Boston Harbor and the evolution of the Seaport District. Long before today's striking waterfront residences, this shoreline was a bustling center of maritime commerce that helped shape Boston into one of America's great port cities.

In the early 20th century, the surrounding Commonwealth Flats were transformed into an active network of working piers, warehouses, and shipping terminals. Nearby Commonwealth Pier and the Boston Fish Pier became gateways for international trade, passenger travel, and New England's thriving fishing industry. Thousands of workers, sailors, merchants, and fishermen passed through these docks every day, making the waterfront one of the busiest commercial districts in the nation.

During the 1960s, the Pier 4 site became home to the legendary Anthony's Pier 4 Restaurant, founded by restaurateur Anthony Athanas. For more than five decades, the restaurant welcomed generations of Bostonians, presidents, celebrities, athletes, and visitors from around the world. It became one of Boston's most celebrated dining destinations and helped establish the waterfront as a place not only for commerce, but also for culture and hospitality.

As Boston's Seaport District evolved into a world-class neighborhood for business, culture, and luxury living, the Pier 4 property was thoughtfully reimagined. Led by developer, Tishman Speyer, the former restaurant site gave way to an architecturally distinctive residential community that honors its waterfront heritage while embracing contemporary design and modern living.

Completed in 2019, Pier 4 Residences features 106 luxury condominium homes overlooking Boston Harbor. Designed to maximize natural light, panoramic water views, and seamless indoor-outdoor living, the building has become one of the signature residential addresses in Boston's Seaport District.

Today, Pier 4 represents the next chapter in a waterfront story that spans more than a century—where Boston's maritime history meets sophisticated urban living. Residents enjoy a unique connection to the harbor while living in one of the city's most dynamic and desirable neighborhoods.
